back in freshman year of high school, i started playing around with “drawing” my friends’ names for their birthdays, so that objects would form letters. over the years, i slowly incorporated objects of my friends’ interests into the drawings, refining them to speak more to the individual. as time passed, i tried to refine and loosen up my hand so i could decrease drawing time dramatically while still maintaining the level of detail i wanted. finding common themes for letters also helped shorten production time (e.g., balloons, trees, silhouettes, cats and dogs). nowadays i’m still constantly practicing whenever someone’s birthday rolls around.
finding the right visual balance, harmony, and storytelling throughout all the letters is something i’m still struggling with; the longer the name, the tougher it is. luckily, my friends tend to have short names.
